In 5 years, everyone will use AI. But almost nobody will understand it. And that gap, the one between "uses AI" and "understands AI", will be the most valuable gap in the economy. Let me explain why, and why right now is the only time you can close it. I keep having the same conversation with smart people. They tell me they'll "get into AI when it matures." When it's easier. When the dust settles and there's a clear winner, a clear workflow, a clear path. It sounds reasonable. Worst strategy I've ever heard. Because AI isn't getting harder. It's getting easier. Right now, today, you can still see how it works under the hood. You can open Claude and understand why your prompt failed. You can build agents in n8n and watch every node fire. You can pull an open-source model, run it locally, and actually see what's happening between your input and the output. That window is closing. Not slowly. Fast. Think about what happened with the internet. The people who configured dial-up modems and navigated BBS boards in 1993 didn't just "understand networking better." That 0.1% is disproportionately people who were there in the messy early days, when understanding the technology was the price of using it. We're in the messy early days of AI right now. The price of entry is curiosity and a few hours a day. Not a CS degree. Not venture capital. Not connections. Just willingness to get your hands dirty with tools that are powerful but imperfect. That price is going to go up. Not because the tools get more expensive. Because the opportunity to learn the fundamentals will disappear behind interfaces designed to hide them from you. I talk to people every day who are using AI to build real things. Not tech bros with CS degrees. Regular people. And that mess, that confusion, that constant change is exactly why right now is the most valuable time to learn. Because the mess is where the understanding lives. Here's what I'd actually do if I were starting from zero today. Pick one AI tool and use it every single day. Not for fun. For real work. Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini. Doesn't matter. The paid version. Use the best model available, not the default. Give it your hardest problems. Not "write me a haiku." Give it the spreadsheet you've been avoiding. The email you don't know how to phrase. The strategy you can't figure out. Push it until it fails, then figure out why it failed. Build one automation. Just one. Use n8n or Make or Zapier. Connect an AI model to something in your actual workflow. Watch it run. When it breaks, fix it. You'll learn more from that one broken automation than from 50 hours of YouTube tutorials. Read one AI paper or deep breakdown per week. Not the headlines. The actual analysis of how something works and why it matters. Build the vocabulary. Understand the concepts. Do this for 90 days and you'll be in the top 5% of AI literacy in your industry. Not because you're special. Because almost nobody is doing it yet. The DIY window doesn't stay open forever. Right now you can see the gears turning. You can stick your hands in and understand the machine. You can build your own workflows, test your own assumptions, develop your own intuition. Soon the gears will be hidden behind a smooth interface. The machine will "just work." And the people who never saw the gears will use it just fine. But they'll never build the next machine. They'll never know what's possible beyond what the interface shows them. They'll never have the instinct to say "wait, this could work differently" because they never saw how it works in the first place. The early internet didn't reward the people who waited for broadband. It rewarded the people who dealt with dial-up. AI won't reward the people who wait for it to be easy.
